Online dating sites devoted to helping singles with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) find love have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Although difficult to talk about, it is often something that needs to be done. Herpes, (HSV-1, HSV-2), HIV, Hepatitis, genital warts, AIDS, chlamydia, gonorrhea, all STIs, it is time we spoke openly.

Breaking the stigma around STIs and those who carry them is hugely important and something many of these dating sites are trying to do. It is not easy to have the conversation with your potential partner about having an STI and what it means, but with more awareness and better education it becomes easier. However, great comfort can come from remembering that you are not alone.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that 110 million people live with a sexually transmitted infection and 20 million more people are newly diagnosed every year, in the United States alone. It is because of this increasing number of people living with STIs that apps and tools are being developed to cater to these singles, and help them live their best life despite having an STI.

These apps are really important, not on only because they help a large portion of the population cope with something that can be difficult, but also because they help create a safe space to have conversations about living with STIs both with people on the apps and off them.

Raising awareness is a big part of breaking the stigma and this is exactly what these apps do. It is especially important, as many people believe that the only way to contract an STI is by being a reckless sexual deviant, but this is simply not true. These apps and tools are able to provide an honest, open community where one can seek out others who are in the same situation and perhaps even find love while doing so.
